About Hearth Witch:
Close your eyes, take a deep breath… Let your current time and place melt away into the background. There’s a roughly hewn door in front of you, push it open, step inside the cottage that has appeared from the aether. There’s a large cauldron hanging on a rack in the fireplace, and the steam rising off it smells strong, astringent, heady. You feel a little lightheaded, but you step forward to the edge of the rug before the fireplace and peer inside the cauldron. It’s slow, simmering contents look deep blue, almost indigo, in the cast iron pot.
A sound behind you causes you to turn and look over your shoulder. A woman, somehow both old and young at once, steps out of the shadows and offers you a ladle. You take it, without hesitation, and dip it into the gently bubbling cauldron. You stir the brew, and the spicy smell of turmeric and the bitter flavor of anise fill the room around you. There’s something deep and potent in this cauldron, and the old-young-woman encourages you with a gesture to spoon some out of the cauldron. You pull up a small sampling, and now the scents of cinnamon and clove surround you. How does it change, you wonder, and you take a small sip. It is sweet and spicy, like a honey-dipped pepper, and the brew feels strangely weighty on your tongue.
When you look at the woman again, she smiles quietly to herself, and moves around the cottage, picking things up from her worktable in the middle, and every so often adding something new to the cauldron. She is the embodiment of the Hearth Witch, and you have tasted her potion. You feel the warmth spread through your limbs, as though you are being wrapped in a large blanket, and you have an overwhelming sense of peace and safety.
This is the Hearth Witch in her element. Combining the magicks of all the natural elements into her salves and potions, her charms and brews. I envision her as Hestia, baking a loaf of bread for the weary soul, and Cerridwen, standing before her cauldron, Awen, patiently stirring. I see her in the deep, intelligent eyes of Baba Yaga, and hear her in the songs and poems of Brigid. Closer to home, I smell her wisdom in the herbs I plant, the oils I use, and in the comforting food I make.
She is the heart, the soul, the wisdom within, and our own Inner Hearth burns with her understanding. ~ Marisa
