“Emanating from the embrace of the Goddess and her God is a wheel of delicious divine energies. The center of this wheel is right where you are. Live here and let your heart stream with an unending flow of adoration. In this way, tend the altar of love.” #151-152 Radiance Sutras
Our heart chakra is the center of the chakra system; the bridge between the lower and upper chakras. When the heart chakra is not functioning properly, it impacts not only the surrounding chakras, but the whole system from bottom to top. Kundalini Shakti cannot rise from root to unite with the crown. Divine Source cannot flow into our power, emotional, and root centers to coax Kundalini to rise. Energetic imbalance, as well as potential physical and emotional repercussions may occur as described under correspondences.
The heart chakra is about relationships, expanding the idea of a bridge. What are the qualities and health of our relationships with our Selves, with others, with the world, with Divinity? When we approach all of our relationships with love, compassion, and a positive outlook, we know that our heart center is balanced and functioning well. This does not mean that we don’t have moments of sadness, anger, and other emotions. Look at your approach from a broad view and honestly identify your tendencies. Then also note the areas where you seem stuck, angry, or apathetic – those will be the areas where more love and more heart work is required.
By centering in the heart to align the chakra, we are opening up that bridge to allow full alignment within our mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual bodies.
The twelve-petal lotus is one of the symbols for the heart chakra. There are practices that will assist and stimulate the unfolding of the lotus. In my personal practice, this is powerful imagery. For the times when I can feel my heart wounds become greater than love, I stop and breathe. I chant and picture the petals unfolding to reveal the “heart” of the matter. Breath is so important for the heart since its element is air.
WHAT THE HEART CHAKRA CRAVES
Does it surprise you that the heart chakra is vegetarian?
Our hearts are all about healthy cravings for food in the green spectrum which contain heart-supportive nutrients like: chlorophyll, fiber, lutein, calcium, folate, vitamin C, calcium, and Beta-carotene. The benefits of eating green (and these nutrients) are: lowering cancer risks, lowering blood pressure and LDL cholesterol levels, normalizing digestion time, canceling out harmful free-radicals, and boosting our immune systems.
The heart is also a LIVE organ and loves to absorb the rejuvenating whole green foods that are filled with oxygen. Get creative with your salads. Mix raw and roasted. Eat what you love and try some new things too. Love smoothies? Ohhhhh you are singing the heart chakra song.
Optimal eating is all about the rainbow – foods that have as many different colors as possible. In future courses, I will be talking more about eating for your chakras!
The bounty of green fruits, herbs, & vegetables include:
Artichokes, Arugula, Asparagus, Avocados, Basil, Broccoli, Broccoli rabe, Brussel sprouts, Celery, Chayote squash, Chinese cabbage, Chives, Cucumbers, Endives, Fennel, Green apples (great for diabetics too!), Green beans, Green cabbage, Green grapes, Green onions, Green pears, Green peppers, Honeydew, Kale, Kiwifruit, Leafy greens, Leeks, Lettuce, Limes, Okra, Peas, Seaweed, Snow Peas, Spinach, Sugar snap peas, Watercress, and Zucchinis
Eat your greens BUT …
Don’t forget the dark chocolate.
Referring back to our list of heart chakra correspondences, you will note that the metal for this chakra is COPPER.
Dark Chocolate is the chocolate that is high in cocoa (like 70-80% cacao/cocoa) and lower in sugar than milk or dark chocolate. All of the wonderful benefits listed below are destroyed and greatly reduced when chocolate is processed, so Hershey kisses don’t count. soooooorry.
Health benefits that our chocolate-loving hearts can get excited about:
A 100 gram (about 3.5 ounces) bar of dark chocolate with 70-85% cacao/cocoa contains:
- 11 grams of fiber.
- 67% of the RDA for Iron.
- 58% of the RDA for Magnesium.
- 89% of the RDA for Copper.
- 98% of the RDA for Manganese.
- It also has plenty of potassium, phosphorus, zinc and selenium.
“Dark Chocolate also has a high concentration of antioxidant compounds called “flavonoids,” which can help prevent heart disease and protect against cancer.” from Live Strong – 12 Clean Dark Chocolate Bars
Now, I am not saying to eat 5 ounces of dark chocolate daily to ensure that you are over the RDA for copper and to boost the other benefits. ahem. BUT, incorporating a few pieces of good quality dark chocolate obviously has heart health benefits, especially when balanced with a kale smoothie. Or grated over the kale smoothie?
How could we not? The heart wants what the heart wants.
SACRED HEART SHAKTI
Be wildly devoted to someone or something.
Cherish every perception.
At the same time, forget about control.
Allow the Beloved to be herself and to change.
Passion and compassion, holding and letting go ~
This ache in your heart is holy.
Accept it as the rise of intimacy with life’s secret ways.
Devotion is the divine streaming through you
From that place in you before time.
Love’s energy flows through your body,
Toward a body, and into eternity again.
Surrender to this current of devotion
And become one with the Body of Love.
~ Radiance Sutra #98, Radiance Sutras
Bhakti (devotion) is the honey of my soul. Ebullient. I am ebullient. I allow my joy to rise, allow the twelve petals of the lotus at my heart to bloom.
My heart is naked and exposed to the source that loves me intensely, deeply, like the greatest love story of the Universe. And in the next breath, I know deeply that I am the greatest love story of the Universe. I am Lover and Beloved.
How could I ever forget that?
I am humbled and strengthened. This opening brings me healing and renewal, sustenance and understanding.
Goddess fills me, infuses me, radiates me.
I am a Sacred Heart Shakti, dancing my heart home again and again with each beat.
Walking the path of the Sacred Heart Shakti is intense, vulnerable, and rewarding. Like the root chakra holds the throne of our creation, the heart chakra is our love (for self, for other, for the world, and for the Divine), the place that pumps our lifeblood throughout our temples, our bodies. It is activated in the giving and receiving.
The heart chakra is the bridge from our lower chakras to our upper chakras, from our earthly worlds to our spiritual worlds. Nothing moves in our bodies, in our energies, without traversing the heart.
How does it make you feel to think of your heart?
“When we protect ourselves so we won’t feel pain, that protection becomes like armor, like armor that imprisons the softness of of the heart.” ― Pema Chödrön, When Things Fall Apart: Heart Advice for Difficult Times
When we suffer, we unconsciously shield our hearts, thinking that we must protect them from pain and sorrow. We make like an armadillo and curl into a tight ball.
Sacred Heart Shakti tells us to allow our sorrow and joy to stretch our hearts, to allow more in and understand that our open hearts are the antidote to stagnation, depression, and anxiety.
This may feel foreign and even uncomfortable at first, but work with it. Gently invite the lotus of your heart chakra to unfold and open. Throughout this month, there will be practices and prompts to work with opening our hearts and embracing the path of the Sacred Heart Woman.
Think about this: What is your love story? How can you express your heart? What actions follow up on your words?
Write your heart, dig deep for some poetic words, pranic prayer, and make a commitment to be a Sacred Heart Shakti.
