The first full Moon of 2021 falls in the high energy fire sign of Leo, and what a tumultuous beginning of the year we have had so far! Some of the more intense astrological themes of 2020 (especially Mars and Uranus) have been brought forward into 2021, but hopefully, we are now better equipped with the wisdom of experience to handle them. This very powerful Full Moon in Leo opposes the Sun and four planets in Aquarius creating a tension between personal and collective needs. What is it that we really want to create and express individually that also contributes to the bigger picture? How can we make the world a better place? The air sign planets will continue this theme all through the month of February when six planets (including the New Moon) are all in the sign of Aquarius. The dawning of the Age of Aquarius begins in the heart. This Full Moon in Leo, the sign of the Heart, illuminates the way out of the collective fear and chaos. It is by acknowledging the power of love and expressing it in our own lives can we move forward. This month’s full moon meditation takes you to the Temple of the Egyptian Lion Goddess, Sekhmet, to reconnect with your personal power and rekindle your life’s passion.

THE FULL MOON IN LEO JANUARY 28, 2021
January’s Full Moon in the sign of Leo emphasizes creativity, self-expression, and the courage to follow your dreams. Leo is the fire sign, which symbolizes the life affirming energy of the sun, and the joy and passion for life. The great Sphinx of Giza, the guardian of the pyramids, once had the face of a lion to symbolize the Age of Leo. The symbol of the Lion (Leo) has been used by royalty for ages; we even call our heroes Lion-hearted. This Full Moon emphasizes the heart chakra, self-expression, and passion. Where do you find joy in life; and even more importantly, are you able to express it? Heart blockages can occur on many different levels. Long standing resentments, bitterness, and victimhood can close down the heart chakra. Working on developing tolerance, compassion for others, and self-love works wonders for opening the heart. Since the astrological sign Leo rules the Inner Child, this Full Moon is a great time to do something out of your ordinary routine and have a little fun.
PERSONALLY SPEAKING:
With the Full Moon in Leo, this is the time to let your inner child shine. Nothing makes a Leo personality happier than being appreciated. They love to have fun and can be generous to a fault; however, the shadow side of Leo can manifest as an over-inflated ego, and the need to be the center of attention all of the time. Leo is the natural entertainer and performer of the zodiac. They are usually outgoing personalities who strive for recognition and often become famous. Well-known Moon in Leo personalities are: Tom Cruise, Julia Roberts, David Bowie, Paul McCartney and Paris Hilton, to name a few.
If your Sun, Moon or Ascendant falls in the sign of Leo, you will be more sensitive to the energy of this Full Moon. Full Moons are about manifesting your intentions. This Full Moon in Leo is about having the courage to create your heart’s desire, and express your authentic self. What is your passion? What feeds your soul? Follow your Heart. Think of the feline kingdom (ruled by Leo). Cats do as they please; cats are comfortable in their bodies, fluid and free. Leo rules the back and spine, so staying flexible by walking, stretching and deep breathing is important now. Physical exhaustion, heart problems and inflammations are signs that your Leo energy may be out of balance.
If you have the Sun, Moon or Ascendant in Leo, this is the perfect time for you to show your true colors and allow more spontaneity and joy into your life. The house Leo occupies in your birth chart shows where you can become more playful, self-expressive and generous. For example: if the Full Moon in Leo falls in your First House of Personality, you may feel very social and need a new outfit or hair-style to celebrate. If the Full Moon in Leo falls in your 4th House of home and family, you may feel like decorating or sprucing up your home with new furnishings, bright colors and fabrics. In the 7th House of relationship, you may want to splurge on a date night with your partner. We all have Leo somewhere in our charts…have fun with it!
PLANETARY PICTURES: THE FIXED T-SQUARE:
This Full Moon in Leo is creating a very dynamic, but stressful, opposition with four planets in Aquarius (Sun, Mercury, Jupiter and Saturn) and squaring Mars and Uranus in Taurus. This aspect, called a Fixed T-Square shows up as a polarization between personal ego (Leo), collective goals (Aquarius) and a stubborn restlessness (Taurus). “Something’s got to give”, as the saying goes to move us out of our comfort zones. The problem is that everyone wants to be “right” and not give up their ground. Our current U.S. political scene is the perfect example of this type of ideological battleground. With the impending Mercury retrograde at the end of this month (see below), we can also expect many delayed decisions in Congress, but cool heads will prevail despite all the rhetoric. On a personal level, this aspect asks us to be open to new ideas and be ready for change. Is there only one option for being “right”? Looking for creative solutions to old problems is the message of this T-Square. Trust your intuition. Have faith that there is a Divine Timing to everything. What can we do as individuals, and as a collective society, to heal our differences? Small steps add up to create the big picture. Create a sacred space in your home for quiet reflection, follow a healthy diet, spend time in nature, respect Mother Earth, help someone in need, and practice gratitude whenever possible.
Mercury Retrograde in Aquarius:
The first Mercury retrograde of 2021 begins on January 31 when Mercury in Aquarius turns retrograde until February 21. This is a very “buzzy” retrograde, as Aquarius rules electricity, new ideas and the rapid flow of information; whether brain waves or electronic media, expect the information circuits to be on overload. In general, this is not the best time to purchase that new smart phone, expensive computer, or the latest high tech gadget, since Aquarius rules the electronics. In addition, the electrical circuitry of the body can get overwhelmed with the over-abundance of Aquarian energy right now. It is vital to grounded, focused and centered during this retrograde period. If you are having trouble sleeping, concentrating, or just feeling mentally overloaded, unplug from your devices for a few hours a day, and definitely keep your bedroom “electronics free”. Drink plenty of water. Yoga, deep breathing exercises, meditation and walking are all great ways to quiet the nerves and get more oxygen into the blood. There is a positive side to this Mercury retrograde, as Mercury will also be making very positive aspects with Jupiter and Venus. This brings in more hope and optimism. Keep your mind and options open. This is a great time to review and re-evaluate your New Year’s resolutions. What areas of your life need to be re-prioritized? You can use the retrograde period to decide what changes you are ready to make in your life. On the world scene, things will remain unsettled and confusing as differing opinions and ideologies continue to twist and twirl in the wind. Trust your intuition about what is right for YOU. The key now is flexibility. There is a new wave of cosmic energy that began with the Solar Eclipse of December 14, 2020. New codes of light are being processed within our cells. If the themes for 2020 were patience and focus, the themes for 2021 are flexibility and change!
FULL MOON MEDITATION WITH THE EGYPTIAN GODDESS SEKHMET:
The Egyptian Lion-headed Goddess Sekhmet can both heal and destroy with her magic. She is the powerful, female warrior and shamaness who governs the women’s blood mysteries of birth, life and death. She gives the courage to face life’s most difficult challenges and transform fear into action. With her assistance, miracles can occur.
The Full Moon is a time for reflecting, going inward and connecting with your inner wisdom. You may want to spend a few minutes outdoors allowing the light of the full moon to bathe your third eye. If the moon is not visible where you are, just enter your quiet sanctuary space and relax. You may want to take a cleansing bath beforehand with sea salt or bath crystals. Light a white and/or red candle. Find a comfortable position (sitting or lying down). Take a few deep breaths, letting go of any stress or discomfort. You are safe and protected by your guides and angels, and only Light may fill your presence.
Now, see yourself walking along a well-worn and familiar path leading you to the main gate of an ancient Temple enclosure. The moon is high and full and casts a whitish glow over the temple. You can feel the energy and protection of your guides around you. It is a good feeling; you are home. A white-robed priestess awaits you inside the gate. She hands you a cone of frankincense and leads you to a large bronze door, which she slowly opens. The frankincense fills the room. As the smoke from the incense clears, you find yourself standing before a tall statue made of smooth black granite. It the image of Sekhmet with her beautiful lion face and well-formed woman’s body. She wears the sun disc on her head as she is the daughter of the Sun God, Ra. She carries a lotus staff in one hand and holds the key of life, the ankh, in the other. She stands a full head taller than you, and her eyes look down upon your face. You see your own reflection in her crystalline eyes. You are safe here, but you cannot keep any secrets from her, for she can see deeply into your heart. Spend some time communing with her. Sekhmet is here to help you cut the cords that bind you to the past. She can assist in releasing old hurts and betrayals. She can devour the past and assist you in shedding outworn layers of cellular memory. Sekhmet knows the shamanic realms of magic and manifestation. You may ask her to grant your heart’s desire, but be sure it is really what you want. Take some time to examine what is inside your heart. What do you need to feel whole? To be in a sound state? Like a protective Mother, she is generous, but will only give you what is for your highest good.
As you prepare to leave, Sekmet offers you a gift. There is a small ruby heart lying at her feet; this is for you. You thank her and leave her presence. The white-robed priestess leads you back through the temple moonlight; back to your own time and space. You feel lighter and more peaceful after this journey. You are safe and remain in a sound state with the Goddess.
May You Walk in Truth and Beauty Always,
Mary
