Welcome to October surprise month! As I am writing this, Mercury has just gone into retrograde motion; Mars is opposite the Sun and at its closest point to earth; and the second Full Moon of this month (called a Blue Moon) falls exactly on October 31st , All Hallow’s Eve / Samhain. The Mercury and Mars retrogrades, along with the outer planet choreography, continues until mid- November. As I have mentioned many times before, all the pre and post-election day chaos is part of this October timeline; and there are even more surprises ahead as Mercury retrograde opposes Uranus (the great Awakener)! Fasten your seatbelts….Libra is the sign of justice and balance, and Supreme Court hearings are now going on. The symbols are all around us; BIG changes are immanent, but how do we maintain our psychic and emotional equilibrium during this time of flux? There are no easy answers, but you can find the clues by looking inside your heart first; ask for guidance; meditate; pray; and then, act on your intuition. The sign of Libra teaches the lessons of love, partnership and fairness for other humans. Following the herd, or following the path to Liberation …..it is an individual choice.

NEW MOON IN LIBRA OCTOBER 16, 2020
Every New Moon is a “birthing” of light in which both luminaries (the Sun & the Moon) offer humanity the opportunity to plant new seeds; to begin anew; to shine the light of consciousness into the shadows. This New Moon in the sign of Libra will allow us to see our relationships in a new light. Balance, partnership, and co-operation are the Libran code. The sign of Libra teaches us that we are never alone in the universe; we are in a constant dance of co-creation with Spirit. Libra is ruled by the planet Venus, the planet also associated with love, beauty and partnership. In Western astrology, the symbol for Libra is the scale; it is the only glyph that is an inanimate object showing that, in its ideal state, the air sign, Libra, “balances” mental discernment with love. It is the sign that follows Virgo’s sense of perfection and precedes Scorpio’s intensity and passion. Libra excels in diplomacy, social graces, the arts and aesthetics.
The “shadow” side of Libra can be eternal procrastination, fear of commitment and the blame game. It is time to own our shadow projections and take a cold, hard look at where our relationships are out of balance. On a collective level, what do we need to do as a society, as part of the global community, and as part of the human race to grow and evolve? In the words of our Native American Elders: “It is time to heal all our relations.”
PERSONALLY SPEAKING:
How have we allowed fear to dictate our decisions? Are we addicted to dysfunctional relationships? Are we capable of loving ourselves? If “Love” seems to be eluding us, these are important New Moon in Libra questions to ask. Because Libra is ruled by Venus, we find many artists, writers, musicians, dancers, designers, artists and models born under this sign. Since they have such well-developed people skills, Librans also make excellent diplomats, negotiators and counselors. Individuals with strong Libran planets can be very charming and social; they are the people pleasers of the zodiac.
When Librans are out of balance, they often become overly dependent on others, and they may have difficulty making their own decisions and dealing with their own emotions. Psychologically, this may result in passive/aggressive behavior with close partners, as they are not comfortable with personal confrontation. Aries, the god of war is the opposite sign; therefore, Librans can project their anger outside themselves. Librans function best when they can channel this energy into an artistic or intellectual pursuit.
Librans make excellent yoga teachers and practioners, as their physical body movements are coordinated and balanced. The part of the body ruled by Libra is the kidneys. It is important for Librans to drink lots of water to flush out toxins. Sugar and excessive amounts of caffeine should be avoided whenever possible. Also learning how to channel anger and repressed emotions is important for their physical (as well as mental) well-being. Acupuncture, yoga, cell salts, Chinese medicine and herbs all help to support a sluggish adrenal system; adrenals are targeted right now with Mars in Aries opposite the Libra Sun, and this can cause fatigue, poor memory, muscle aches and weight fluctuations. As always, where you find the sign of Libra in your horoscope (by house placement, as well as any planets in the sign) is where you find your “heart”. This is where you find what you love; what makes you happy; your personal sense of style and aesthetics; and how well you play with others.
PLANETARY PICTURES:
Sun and Moon in Libra opposite Mars in Aries Retrograde and Square Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn: (Elements of this Cardinal T-Square have been with us off and on since January 2020. I have written about them extensively in previous posts).
This month, the Sun and Moon in Libra are opposite retrograde Mars in Aries AND squaring Saturn and Pluto in Capricorn. With this line-up, the Libran code of diplomacy, cooperation and partnership runs head on into the brute force of Mars in Aries and the stone-wall testing of Saturn and Pluto. Since Mars is retrograde, some of that blunt force is lessened, but Saturn and Pluto are relentless; whatever lessons we still need to learn will be driven home. The Libran energy wants to negotiate terms under siege, but this is still a highly frustrating time. Patience is the key. Things feel like they need to be “done yesterday” (especially in terms of partnership, legal actions and disputes), but the lesson of the retrograde Mars is that there may be an important reason for the delays. Saturn and Pluto will take no shortcuts; they hold to the letter of the law. Libran diplomacy, truth and conciliation will win the day. An angry retrograde Mars can fuss, but not much will get done.
Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio opposite Uranus in Taurus: Further complicating the Mars retrograde picture, we also have Mercury retrograde in Scorpio. We may feel like we are revisiting old terrain: past disputes, relationship issues, or conflicts may come back to haunt us. Scorpio likes to dig up secrets and old skeletons in the closet. Mars in Aries likes a clean fight, but Mercury in Scorpio will go for covert and subversive tactics. All this will be played out in the political and international forums. In addition, Uranus in Taurus opposite Mercury in Scorpio retrograde will add its own brand of shock and awe to the mix. Uranus likes lightning bolt surprises, and will definitely shake up the status quo! Mercury in Scorpio will play detective, fact-check and supply the intel for Uranus’ shake-up. Both Scorpio and Taurus rule finances, so this is a good indicator of what sector will feel this the most.
Venus in Virgo Opposite Neptune in Pisces and Trine Jupiter in Capricorn: This is a mixed bag, but more hopeful that not. Venus and Jupiter are both in practical earth signs, which offer the possibility of constructive criticism and practical expansion. Virgo wants to “clean up” things, restore order to chaos, and supply practical solutions that are of benefit and service to everyone. Her opposition to Neptune may bring a twinge of disillusionment or fantasy with it, but overall, Jupiter in Capricorn is an excellent indicator for “getting back to business”’. This is a positive aspect if you work in the healing, food or hospitality industries.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
In the ancient Egypt of 5,000 years ago, the original symbol for the sign of Libra was the sun rising over the hilltops. However, Libra has come down to us through the ages as being represented by the glyph of the scales. In ancient Egypt, the Goddess Maat is the Goddess of Truth, Justice, and Right Balance (Karma). She is the Goddess who oversees the “weighing of the heart” of the deceased on the karmic scales. The heart is weighed against her white feather of truth, and the heart must be found lighter than the feather, in order for the individual to pass on to paradise. Maat was not born from another god or goddess. She has been around since the beginning of creation as the principal of cosmic order; she is consciousness itself. Even the Sun God, Ra, lives by the cosmic order of Maat. From Maat, we learn the concept of inner balance (male/female, yin/yang), which becomes the hallmark of Libra.
MEDITATION IN LIBRA WITH EGYPTIAN GODDESS MAAT:
Light a white candle. If you have a favorite crystal or healing stone keep it with you on your journey. Lie down and relax your body; breathe deeply leaving the stress and tensions of everyday reality behind you. Imagine yourself in a magical garden filled with lush plants, exotic flowers of every color and the scent of soft green grass. You hear birds singing, and you feel as carefree as a small child. You are lying beneath the branches of an immense tree which reaches to the sky. You feel nurtured and safe here. Remind yourself that you are here today to recharge your energy at your inner “tree of life”. This tree branches into all dimensions and timelines and unites all aspects of yourself. It is your Karmic Family Tree and contains the knowledge of who you are; who you have been; and who you will continue to be. The eternal roots of this tree will continue to nourish your soul (and all you touch) with love, healing, and forgiveness.
Stepping from behind your Tree of Life, you see the Goddess Maat as a beautiful woman wearing a long white gown. On her head, she wears golden crown topped with a pure white feather. She is as eternally wise as she is a loving, and she is a very powerful guide to have on your side. Her message is one of hope. She tells you that no matter how challenging the situations may be in your life; no matter how difficult the relationships, she is here to help you regain your balance and find your center. She will help you to find the right words; the right action; to alleviate your stress. You will replace fear and worry with the inner knowledge that you are in a state of divine grace; your heart has been weighed down for too long, but now it is lighter than a feather. You feel your heart expand with her words; your mind feels crystal clear; you are more energized and alive. Maat tells you that you may reenter this garden with your tree of life anytime you feel stressed or overloaded. It will always be your sanctuary. She hands you her white feather of Truth. It is now your own. Walk in Truth and Beauty.
Blessings, Mary
