“it is a serious thing
just to be alive
on this fresh morning
in this broken world.”
— Mary Oliver
Blessings of the Goddesses of August and Happy Nemoralia!
I have found myself going back to basics. Simple breathing exercises. Seed mantras. Gentle chakra clearings. Offering a tea light and incense on the altars. Writing. And more writing. Spontaneous napping. Watching the birds out my window. Sitting in the sun for a few minutes. There has been a comfort in the easy, the familiar. The energy of the pandemic, of our politics, of the economy can all supplant our self care, sap our energy, and distract us from the familiar practices that ground us and remind us that “it is a serious thing to just be alive”.
Lammas is celebrated on August 1 for many Pagans. I am more Goddess-centric and Nemoralia is always my main HolyDay for August. Looking for some Lammas inspiration? Check out Gathering in Abundance – Honouring Lammas by Michelle Boxley on the blog.
The Full Moon of August 3 belongs to the Goddess Diana and was celebrated as an ancient Roman Festival of the Torches called Nemoralia. Her temple looked down on Lake Nemi and there, on the nights of the brilliant moon, was a perfect reflection of Luna. As above, so below. Devotees of the Goddess and celebrants would wind their way down to the shores of Lake Nemi and make offerings and petitions to the Goddess.
On this upcoming Full Moon, perhaps take some offerings to a lake near you for Diana. Reclaim some of your energy that has been scattered these past few months. Allow Goddess and the Moon to recharge you. Banish and Bless in Her Name. Allow some of Her wild activate your own. How are you sustaining? What is nourishing you right now? What are the blessings that have snuck up quietly and enabled you to take a few more steps forward? How are you grounding? How are you rising?
The challenging astrology continues with a moon square Uranus which is further exacerbated by a Mercury opposition Saturn. All the more reason to sync to Goddess and your other Guides and Allies and make this Moon about purification and reclamation. Mary Lomando has a great Astrology Update for this Full Moon!
I wish you the Blessings of August and all of the abundance that Goddess is offering. May you and your Beloveds be safe and well. MotherHouse and Mystery School of the Goddess are here to support you!
For all those in the path of the Hurricane – stay safe and dry!
