“Kuan Yin’s presence is the abode of compassion in which we live…”
Beloved throughout Asia as well as the West, Kuan Yin, the Goddess of Mercy, is an emanation of the universal Divine Mother and cherished as an inexhaustible wellspring of love. She is an awake, fresh, living and breathing nuclear movement of energy and life force. Loving Her is a way of being which invites both tender presence and fierce compassion.
In Chinese, Her name Guan Shi Yin translates as “Look. World. Sound.” and so one of Her most beloved and poetic names is “She Who Hears the Cries of the World.” She is known as Kannon or Kanzeon in Japan; Kannin in Bali; Kwan Seum Bosal in Korea; Mae Kuan Im in Thailand; and Quan The Am Botat in Vietnam. The Taoists call her Kuan Yin Ma or Mother Kuan Yin.
Kuan Yin is a Compassionate Mother to us all, without exception, and responds to anyone and everyone’s call for help regardless of their gender, skin color, class, sexual orientation, nationality, political party, religion or net worth. She is a fountain of kindness for all living beings including animals and nature.
The All-Embracing Kuan Yin is beloved of outcasts, the untouchables, the forgotten, the marginalized, the oppressed, the poor and needy, Her boundless heart is not afraid of suffering.
In Buddhism, She’s worshipped as Lady Buddha as well as a bodhisattva—one who willingly stays here on earth with us until all beings are liberated from all suffering. Just a few of Her many emanations include White Robe Kuan Yin offering protection; Queen of Healing offering medicine and longevity; Kuan Yin the Anointer offering blessings through water; Nine Moons Kuan Yin bringing fertility; The Goddess Who Opens Her Treasury bringing financial ease; Lady of the Blooming Lotus; Resting in Royal Ease inviting silent repose; Thousand Armed Goddess of Fierce Compassion responding to cries of suffering; and the Wish-Fulfilling Kuan Yin answering our heart’s prayers. Right now we need a mother of mercy, strength and protection to keep us going in the heart-shattering horror and cruelty of our modern world. Because of Her radical heart that loves all beings, Her way of tender presence and fierce compassion is an extraordinary antidote to desensitization, fear, apathy, and despair in these times.
According to the Lotus Sutra, an ancient Buddhist text, Kuan Yin can appear in any form and clothed in a way to feel familiar and accessible to the one who calls Her. So if we’re always looking for a beautiful and serene Chinese lady in white robes, we very well might miss Her entirely!
She embodies the essentially feminine power of unconditional love that simply gives and asks for nothing in return. In Her embrace, She is Our Mother. Kuan Yin pours “loving” out of Her vase day and night, night and day. Many speak to Kuan Yin as they would their best friend sharing their burdens, worries, heart-breaks, and fears.
With Her inspiration of radical and magnificent love without boundaries, Her presence in our lives encourages us to wish happiness for others; help ease any suffering or soothe aching hearts and be the balm of comfort as She is for us. Kuan Yin empowers us to love boldly and take action even in the face of fear or hatred.
She offers a lap of comfort and succor for our weary spirits, exhausted bodies, overwhelmed lives and parched hearts. You can just call Her “mother”. Call Her whatever you wish. Just call Her.
She will come.
