The ancient Egyptian New Year was celebrated on the summer solstice, commemorating the longest day of Ra, the sun god; as well as the rising of the star Sirius, which heralded the Nile flooding and divine blessings on the land of Egypt. The great triad of Goddesses, Isis, Hathor and Nut were intimately connected with this ‘divine rebirthing” of Egypt each year, as depicted in wondrous detail on the walls of Dendera Temple in Upper Egypt, which was built by Cleopatra.
This festival is one of the oldest in Egyptian history and illustrates the importance of this celebration from archaic times all the way through to the Roman occupation of Egypt. The ancient Egyptians recognized the importance of Sirius (one of the stars of constellation Canis Major) as the brightest star in the sky, as well as the birthplace of Isis. They called this star, Sopdet, and during Cleopatra’s time, it was named Sothis or “the Soul of Isis”.
The liturgical and public celebrations for New Year’s Day began at dawn when Sirius appeared on the horizon as the shining morning star emerging from the darkness of the underworld. The astrologer/priests of the First Dynasty noted that the annual Nile floods coincided with the reappearance of Sirius and called this occurrence “the going out of the Goddess” (this is described by modern astronomers as the heliacal rising of Sirius.) This connection between the star Sirius, the Goddess, and the renewal of Egypt is depicted in every temple and tomb in ancient Egypt; but nowhere is it more visually stunning and artistically executed than at Dendera Temple, the “seat” of the divine feminine triad: Hathor, Isis, and Nut.
At Dendera, we can still view inscriptions dedicated to “She who shines into her temple on New Year’s Day.” The Chapel of the New Year at Dendera Temple is dedicated to the Goddess Nut, who births both the sun and Hathor from her starry womb. Nut is our Cosmic Mother reminding us that our Sun is but one star in the vast Milky Way. (In fact, the entire temple of Dendera is aligned to the stars and is considered to be an astrological library etched in stone.)
On New Year’s Day, the temple was filled with the sounds of chanting priestesses, sistra and drums. The healing energy of sound reverberated throughout the temple in waves of joy. Everyone from the pharaoh to the common folk benefited from the “rebirthing” celebrations, which lasted for 14 days. As the wheel of the year turns to the Summer Solstice now, it is the perfect time to celebrate our Light, our connection to Spirit and reconnect with Mother Earth!
SUMMER SOLSTICE /NEW MOON: TREE OF LIFE MEDITATION:
Find your quiet inner space and relax. Light a white candle.
Take a few deep breaths, centering yourself in the moment.
Take a piece of paper and write down your intentions for this New Moon. Fold the paper and keep it near you.
Now, imagine yourself in a beautiful green meadow filled with lush, green grass. You notice a slight breeze with the scent of flowers in the air. You lie down beneath a majestic pine tree, whose branches stretch miles into the sky. This is your personal Tree of Life. Its pine needles make a soft, fragrant cushion beneath you, and you feel totally relaxed and at one with the Earth. You can smell the soothing essence of pine, fresh grass and wild flowers all around you. Lying here, you look up and see a clear, cloudless sky above you. Even though it is daylight, you can see the outline of the Crescent Moon and a brilliant blue/white star pulsating above it. This is the perfect “wishing” star, the Star Sirius. You remember your list if intentions and repeat them to yourself (or out loud) while concentrating on this star. (If you don’t remember them all, they are already written on the paper, which is sufficient.)
You remember that the Goddess Isis is connected with this Star Sirius, and she is the Goddess of magic, miracles and healing. See yourself planting your “wish list” below the big pine treat. Then, imagine the light from the star shining down and “watering” your list, as well as the roots of your magical tree. Now, feel the light from this star penetrate your crown chakra and proceed down the meridians of your body to your feet. You wiggle your toes with delight! You are pulsing with star light in your body. You feel energized, refreshed and more alive!
Now, picture each of your intentions as if it had already come true, and imagine how you would feel if that were really your reality. Ask Isis (however you envision her) to assist with this process of creative manifestation in your lie. As you sit with her, you can feel her beautiful unconditional love and support for you. You truly feel like her Divine Child. After a few minutes, you thank her and say goodbye.
Bring your awareness to the present. Take the paper with your intentions and place it on your altar (if you don’t have one, you can create one with a few of your favorite crystals, sacred objects, yellow or white candle and fresh summer flowers). Allow your intentions to be nurtured by Isis over the next 14 days and know that you may return to your magical Tree of Life at any time.
