FULL MOON IN CANCER:
The First Full Moon of 2017 falls in the sign of Cancer, the Great Cosmic Mother represented by Mother Mary, Isis, Quan Yin, Tara and all the compassionate female deities. The Moon is in its home sign in Cancer, the cardinal water sign which rules our emotions, our connection to our physical mother, as well as the archetypal feminine; our astral memories, and our relationship to home, family, our ancestral lineage and the Earth Herself. Esoteric astrology teaches that it is in the sign of Cancer that we emerge from the safety and security of the cosmic womb and give birth to ourselves as the Divine Child.
The year begins with this Cancer Full Moon giving us the opportunity to feel and heal our emotions. The Cancer/Capricorn polarity of the Full Moon suggests that nurturing our inner self is the prerequisite for taking care of our material needs. Real security begins inside. Meditate in the lap of the Great Mother and feel the Love!
Cancer is the feminine water sign, the “womb of life “, and rules over motherhood and family, the tribe, our home, hereditary karmic “roots” and inherited psychological patterns. Esoterically, the sign of Cancer is ruled by the Moon, and it is our psychic connection to the akashic records and past life memories.
When we have a Full Moon, the Sun and Moon are in opposite signs. The Cancer/Capricorn brings up male/female issues; it is the parental axis in astrology, which determines our closest relationships. Where are we being too co-dependent? Where are we being too controlling and rigid? Where do we need to establish proper boundaries? Do we deny that we have any emotional needs at all? Are we afraid of being vulnerable? Are we grounded in our physical body? Have we become emotionally obsessed with materialism? Issues around security, whether emotional or financial, tend to bring up intense feelings and fears. Some of these issues may be long-standing or karmic ones involving family and significant others; some may involve our personal security and physical well-being; and some are rooted in collective values.
But no matter what the occurrences, we are being asked to rise to the occasion and make decisions based on maturity, wisdom and experience, rather than habitual, unconscious responses. It is important to be aware of “knee jerk” responses when our emotional buttons get pushed, especially during a Full Moon when feelings are close to the surface. All of the cardinal signs (Aries, Libra, Capricorn, and especially Cancerians) may feel exceptionally emotional during this Full Moon. It is important not to dwell on past losses, but to move forward. (See Cardinal Cross below).
Wherever the sign Cancer falls in your birth chart (by House placement) is where you are being asked to clear away old karmic conditioning and accept your “Divine (Inner) Child” aspect. No matter what your Sun Sign, this Full Moon is a good time to spend a few quiet moments reflecting on what is important in your life; what you are thankful for; and what you would like to change or create for the upcoming year. Since this Full Moon falls mid-week it may be more difficult to find the time to reflect, renew and recharge yourself, but a few minutes in the morning before you jump out of bed, or a few minutes before you fall asleep will work wonders. Taking a walk in nature, looking at the stars, giving a hug, sharing your gifts… all help to shift our perception to what really matters in life.
This Cancer Full Moon magnifies the Grand Cardinal Cross involving 5 planets: the Sun, Moon, Uranus and Pluto and Jupiter signifying major “breakthroughs” or” breakdowns”. Think of 2 rubber bands stretched to the max in opposite directions. Something has to give!
We may also feel that we are being pulled in many different directions by life. The best way to work through this challenging configuration is to take a deep breath, step back, and assess each situation in a focused, but flexible manner. As this New Year opens political controversies, global terrorism, natural disasters and economic challenges dominate the news. We can’t make these events just disappear, but we can control our reaction to them. Over aggressive egos, anger, and knee-jerk responses will only add to the chaos.
Patience and cooperation is the key. It is important to remain focused on your intentions, but to also see things from a different perspective. The message of the Grand Cross is that new solutions, new thinking and new visions are necessary to resolve old problems.
Mercury in Capricorn Direct:
With this Full Moon Mercury is now direct (finally) and moves into the sign of Capricorn, which reinforces the message of practical, focused thinking and getting back to business after the hazy chaotic retrograde of the past few weeks. It is a good time to begin projects which have been on the back burner the past few weeks.
Venus and Neptune Conjunct in Pisces:
The planet Neptune is in its home sign of Pisces and raises the octave of Venus (love and beauty) to one of unconditional love and compassion. It is time to forgive and give up old grudges; allowing old wounds to be healed. This is the true meaning of Christ consciousness and the Piscean archetype. We cannot move forward individually, as a country, or as a collective unless we truly open our hearts. Finding “peace” within ourselves and our personal relationships is a good place to begin.
