It’s almost time for the Summer Solstice here in the Northern Hemisphere, and the Sun is making her glowing presence felt! While we often associate the Goddess with the Moon, cultures around the world have also honored Sun Goddesses. Midsummer, or the Summer Solstice, is an excellent time to meet and celebrate these Ladies of the Light.
While each Sun Goddess will have her own energies and her own domain, Sun Goddesses do have some attributes in common. Like the Sun itself, Sun and Solar Goddesses govern the realm of personal power — they invite us to step into our own Light, to claim our personal power, to allow ourselves to shine in all our glory. (Summer Solstice is also a great time to bring Solar Plexus Chakra work into your practice!) Solar Goddesses can help us illuminate the areas of our lives where shadows need to be dispelled. They are also wonderful guides as we seek to find that which lights us up from within, those relationships and activities and subjects which give us joy and excite our creativity and intellect. Working with a Solar Goddess can literally be enlightening, serving as beacons as you walk your spiritual path.
One of my favorite Solar Goddess is Amaterasu, Japanese Goddess of the Sun. Her name means “Shining One” or “Shining in Heaven.” Amaterasu encourages us to go forth and allow our light to illuminate our path and the world around us. She reminds us that we are meant to shine, not to play small or hide our gifts under false modesty or out of fear of being told we are too much.
Midsummer also gives us a chance to dance with Aine, the Fairy Queen. This Irish Goddess represents the spark of life within us all, the fire of the Sun that brings the world to life. She was celebrated at the Summer Solstice and even Christian tradition recognized her as the Queen of the Fae. Aine encourages us to play, to tap into that which sparks our creativity and joy.
Egypt, that land of the powerful Sun, was home to many Solar Goddesses. Hathor, Sekhmet, and Bastet are all Goddess you may wish to meet and work with as you explore Solar Goddess Energy. The Daughters of the Sun Goddess Activation Course at Mystery School of the Goddess is one way to meet these Goddesses and develop tools for bringing their energy and blessings into your life.
Whether you choose to research and work with individual Sun Goddesses, or you are drawn to work with Solar Goddess energy more generally, bringing the Lady of the Light into your life is a wonderful way to find your own Goddess power. This expansive, creative energy is a valuable tool as you work to manifest your best self and your best life.
