My passion is mermaids. I like mermaid everything and unsurprisingly, as a devoted Goddess girl, mermaid spirituality and the sacred feminine in mermaid form was always going to be something I’d start poking around with. It was inevitable really.
I love working with the Goddess in her mermaid aspect, and to see the mermaid archetype as a lens for the Wild Divine Feminine to come through. The mermaid archetype inspires me like crazy.
If you think mermaids today, you’ll probably think of little girl’s birthday parties, Princess Ariel, or something glittery and pink with a green tail. If you go into the new age, mermaids are experiencing something of a renaissance, with books about mermaids being powerful messengers of romantic love and healing, and lots of stuff about incarnated mermaids: peeps who believe that they are a mermaid in human form. There are even mermaid magazines devoted to all things mer, online communities of mer-folk, stuff about mermaid crystals and mermaid angels and all sorts.
But even in the current mermaid renaissance, no one seems to have a lot to actually say about mermaids in a spiritual sense. There’s a lot of fluff, because people love mermaids (quite rightly) and desperately want to talk about them, but there is not a lot for them to actually say about the mermaids themselves.
I think this is because in so many ways they represent the shapeshifting, mysterious, mutable qualities of the Divine Feminine. She’s kinda knowable, but she’s a wild thing: she will go where she will, take you along for the ride, then disappear beneath the waters. I just can’t help myself – I love these kinds of goddesses.
I reckon the mermaids represent the secret, hidden inner life of women, the wild feminine within us today. They are a potent mix of the feminine and the element of water, known for being changeable and loving and stormy and sexy and frustrating and all those taboo feminine things that historically we have been punished for as women.
Of course there are many mermaid-associated Goddesses, but most of the old mermaid stories are not about goddesses; they are about everyday mermaids. Mermaids who fall in love with a mortal and bring him back to live under the sea. Mermaids who seduce sailors and destroy them with their mermaidenly beauty. Mermaids who hang around treacherous ponds and rivers, waiting to drown a passerby. Mermaids who give up everything for love. Mermaids who wreak revenge on their enemies and people who have disrespected her or been cruel to her.
These mermaidenly qualities of love, deep emotion, sovereignty, anger and vengence, beauty and sexuality are all aspects of Femininity that have been denied to us throughout the centuries. We have been punished for being too sexy, too beautiful, or too vain: our voices have been silenced, our anger ignored, our power taken away from us, over and over throughout the last 2500+ years of life on this planet.
Today, things are changing (hurrah!) and women are at their strongest and most powerful that they have been for thousands of years. But what woman still doesn’t hear the unspoken voice whispering across the centuries, telling her that her body isn’t good enough, that she should stop making a fuss, that her voice doesn’t matter and that her feelings are irrational?
This is the role of the Mermaid Divine in the 21st century. To awaken the inner sovereignty of women. To encourage them to take back their voice, their power, and all their glorious sexy bits. To respect their deep, changing feelings as a strength, not as a weakness. To honour and celebrate all things beautiful, pleasurable.
The story of the mermaids is the story of women, and all the things that the patriarchy tried to censor about us. Today the mermaid is a symbol, a vessel, a portal, to reclaiming all those forbidden treasures that are hidden just beneath the ocean’s surface in all women today. She is an inspiration that reminds us of our own magic, mystique, and power.
She’s the inspiration that gets me through, well, most anything. When nothing else can boost me, the Mermaid Goddess is there to remind me that I too am a powerful mysterious sovereign being, and that I am just dandy right as I am.
