I’m a huge fan of everything Wendy Rule, and was even honoured enough to dance with her onstage at last year’s Glastonbury Goddess Conference, and it’s a delight to review her work here.
ABOUT THE ALBUM
The Lotus Eaters is inspired by stories from the Odyssey, and like in the Odyssey it feels like the swell of the sea and water is ever present – from the rolling sound of the surf in the track Horses, to the gentle, smoke-edged title track the Lotus Eaters, which sounds like a waterfall faery opium den, in a good way. Wendy explores songs about grief, loss, and devouring love, stories about sorceresses and goddesses and mermaids, in a tender and heartbreakingly beautiful way.
It’s definitely a water album all the way – lots of beautiful cello and xylophone in here, yum yum yum. Have a listen to Horses, one of my favourite tracks on the album.
ABOUT WENDY RULE
Wendy creates music that is inspired by her spiritual pathway as a witch. The most striking thing about Wendy’s music is her voice: her haunting, soul-shaking, passionate voice. She is a rare true pagan artist, creating work that combines both impassioned spirituality and supreme skill and talent.
(She also looks quite a lot like my mum.)
WHY I LOVE IT
The Lotus Eaters is my favourite Album of Wendy’s. Her work is usually characterised as “dark, sonic theatre” (and it’s deffo all worth a listen), but I think this one is a little bit of an anomaly. A beautiful anomaly! I like to think of it as Wendy Rule’s version of Led Zeppelin’s Houses of the Holy album: often overlooked, but so spellbindingly beautiful and mermaidenly; the hidden aquamarine jewel amongst the dramatic dark coastline.
If it was a colour, it would be a rolling teal and dark turquoise sea, frothing against the rocks under a stormy sky. If it were a smell, it would be saltwater and wind after a coastal storm, or the coolness of a cold, dark cave under the cliffs – a moment of silence, and a feeling of damp, deep presence.
