Every June I travel up to my parents in the Interior of British Columbia, Canada to hand pick my Sage for the year. Parts of the Interior of BC are considered a semi-desert which, allows Artemisia Tridentata (sagebrush) to grow abundantly. This year I was blessed to be accompanied by my parents, my 3.5 year old daughter Maya and my parent’s 3 dogs. The sun and breeze welcomed us as we found the right spot to start harvesting. I took some time to introduce myself to the land and ask permission to gather sagebrush there and left an offering in reciprocity. The Artemisia genus is named in honor of the Greek Goddess Artemis so I also invited her to be with us as we harvested our sage.
Artemis is the daughter of Zeus & Leto and the twin to Apollo. She is known to be the virgin huntress & goddess of the moon, of all things wild and of birth. During my Shamanic journeys to Artemis I have learned that she is here to teach us the importance of spending time in nature while honoring the land, plants and animals. She teaches us to follow our intuition and instincts as we strive to become our authentic selves. She teaches us how to connect to the moon, moon cycles and our bodies as we move through all stages of life.
As I filled my basket full of Sagebrush I began to reflect on the history of this plant and the medicine it has brought to so many people over the last hundreds, if not thousands of years.
Sage is the traditional plant used for sweat lodge and ritual purification. Smudging with smoke is a universal practice that can be done to cleanse and purify energies that are not serving you or your space. Sage is often used, as it is effective at purifying. It is also used to symbolize the life-giving power of women and offers strength, wisdom, and clarity of purpose. Sage also has medicinal properties and has been used effectively for wound healing, digestive challenges, immune boosting, and pain reduction.
We gathered all of our Sagebrush and bought it back to my parents where we created sacred space and invited Artemis to be with us as we hand wrapped and dried our Sage bundles.
I encourage you to invite Artemis into your garden or connect with her somewhere in nature. Walk barefoot on the earth and call upon her in your own way. Open your heart and your womb to her. Take time to feel her presence, wisdom and support. Say thank you to Artemis by leaving her an offering in your garden or in nature. Suggestions include: anything representing the moon, wild flowers, sage, honey, anything the colour forest green, blood red, or moonlight silver.
