In the card above we see a 1950’s stereotype housewife trying to manage the many tools that helped her succeed in creating her perfect home. Each tool saved her more time and energy and the more of it she saved the more she took on until she can no longer manage any of it. Now all those tools are ruling her and she is not looking perky or successful at all.
Has burnout hit you lately? We all get there eventually. Often we can see and feel it coming but we just keep pushing ourselves to go one more hour before we are too tired to sleep, to knock off just two last things on that darned TO DO list, to further refine an already perfectly acceptable project, and on and on. The point is we don’t stop. Somehow we feel we have to keep pushing and pushing till there is nothing left. After all, this is the suit of Wands, or fire. That initial Ace of Wands that sparked the flames of action just kept on burning, fueled by our will power, success and maybe even our egos.
Now, we pretty much have to stop. Maybe we don’t want to but circumstances, family, friends, or our health finally force us to. We have to regroup, heal, calm down and get centered again. This doesn’t mean our dreams and success have to be over – just that it is time to regroup.
This card reminds us to take a look at what drives us and why we push ourselves so relentlessly. Finally surrendering to a break, a vacation, or simply accepting help is part of our path to mastery. We really cannot, and I think ought not, do it all alone. In this surrender we often find new opportunities just waiting for our expertise, enthusiasm, and hard work. The option is not pretty; people have worked themselves to death, literally, or burned out all their relationships and support only to find themselves crashed and unable to get up.
If the Ten of Wands speaks to you today, maybe our poor tired out housewife can give you a clue. Take a break. Ask yourself why you do this to yourself and if it is really worth it. Lay down the burdens and maybe you will find that with your head and hands clear, you might just get a fresh idea and some renewed energy to let you work smarter, not harder.
Blessings to you – Kathryn Ravenwood
