Mythology has several well-known mother-daughter pairs, such as Demeter and Persephone or Gaea and her daughters (Rhea, Themis and Dione). For these series of photo-shoots, we helped each mother-daughter pair discover their goddess archetype and the unique ways in which each mother and daughter are both unique and similar.
Mary R.’s individual photo-shoot encompassed the archetypes of Venus, the goddess of love, and Gaia, the mother earth archetype. Both the sensual Venus and the wise, rooted Gaea archetypes share a deep connection to earth and Nature.
Beatrice, Mary Reid’s five year old daughter, strongly identifies with the goddess Diana, maiden huntress who runs wild in the moonlit forest, and who rules over the faery realms. Beatrice is a wild, energetic and independent spirit who is attuned to the cycles of the moon and the rhythms of nature. She loves Disney’s Brave, whose main character, Merida, represents the Dianic archetype through her independence, maidenhood, and skills with bow and arrow. Little Beatrice loves to run in her yard with bow and arrow, and leave offerings for the fairies. Mary R. had a vision of the goddess Diana standing on a hilltop at sunset, bow and arrow drawn taut. Diana has shown herself to be a protectress of this mother-daughter pair over the years.
While Beatrice was initially shy of the camera, she soon forgot her nerves when running down the dirt path and collecting pine cones and flowers. Her favorite outfit was her fairy costume with the “magic” golden limb. Both Beatrice and Mary Reid posed with the bow and arrow, symbols of the goddess Diana, as well as the snake, which has long been known as a symbol of the Divine Feminine. Their bare feet, naturally colored clothes, and twigs in their hair also represent the wild, natural freedom of the goddess Diana.
Mary R. and Beatrice make regular offerings to the Goddess Diana by planting flowers in her honor, observing the moon cycles, and leaving notes and gifts for the fairies in a special “fairy mailbox.” Sometimes the fairies leave Beatrice little stones, shells and other natural treasures.
