This ceremony was written for the Ix Chel week by me for the 52 Goddesses eCourse. Each week in 52 Goddesses reveals a new Goddess, Her ancient wisdom and living mythology, a Goddess Practice to connect (such as the one below), and resources to explore each Goddess further. 52 Goddesses is a Self Study course and you may begin at anytime. Join us for the Goddess Ix Chel New Moon Meditation to kick off the seeds of creation on Sunday, August 24 (or listen to the archive).
Since Ix Chel is associated with the Moon in all of its cycles, this working will be most effective beginning with the Dark Moon (the night directly before the New Moon), working the Full Moon, and ending with the New Moon; however, you can perform it anytime up to the Full Moon. Wishing you New Moon Blessings!
Dark Moon – Ix Chel Meditation – We will be working with the Crone aspect of Ix Chel – the Wise Crone, the Midwife of Creation, the Physician.
- 3 candles (can be tealights and don’t forget a lighter!)
- Copal or Sage for smudging and clearing your space, and a vessel to burn it in (like a shell). Copal will require charcoal and something like a cauldron that can hold the hot charcoal.
- A bowl filled halfway with water (preferably a dark blue or black bowl)
- Image of Ix Chel in Crone Form as above (printed or statue)
- Paper, pen and envelope
On the evening of the Dark Moon, create sacred space somewhere that is quiet and where you will not be disturbed. You can play quiet meditation music in the background – something with flutes and drums would be lovely and appropriate for Ix Chel. On your altar (if you have one) or on a low table on the ground, place the three candles, your smudging supplies, the bowl that is half-filled with water, the image of Ix Chel in her Crone Form, and set the paper and pen on the side.
Begin by smudging your space beginning in the North and moving clockwise with copal or sage. At each direction, pause for a moment and lift the smudging vessel; breathe deeply. From North to East to South to West to North again. Place the smudging vessel back on the altar and sit down in front of the altar. Light the three candles, representing the three aspects of Ix Chel.
You can write a prayer to Ix Chel in preparation for this ritual or you can use the prayer here. I wrote this message from Ix Chel for the Dark Moon night and for the planting of our seeds.
From Ix Chel – speak it out loud if you like – this is the Goddess speaking to YOU:
Breathe Me Woman, into your head, your thoughts, your intentions.
Breathe Me as I breathe you into Creation.
Breathe Me deep, Woman, into your womb, your heart, your throne.
Let us embrace as Sisters on our thrones of Creation.
Give Me your seeds and let us laugh over them, pour tears into them, hold silence unto them.
Let us set them gently into our thrones, adorn them, infuse them.
Let us clasp our hands on our bellies and feel them growing, kicking, burgeoning.
And when the time is ripe and our thrones are bursting,
Let us crouch and moan and rock.
Let us birth these seeds grown strong with prayer, with our beauty, with our secret Selves.
Give me your Creation – I am your Midwife. I am your throne. I am the receiving Earth.
Breathe Me, Woman. Breathe Us into Creation.
Now breathe deeply. Add some fire to your copal or sage and allow the words of the Goddess to move through you, to inspire you. We are here on this Dark Moon night to plant a seed. The seed of your woman power. The seed of your creation. Look at the light of the candles reflecting on the water in the bowl. Ask Ix Chel to infuse you with her wisdom. Take the pen and paper and write your seeds of creation – what are you bringing to yourself with the assistance of Ix Chel? Take the directions of the message literally if you feel so moved, meaning that you can write the “time of the birth” and mark it on your calendar.
When you are done writing your seeds of creation, place the paper into the envelope and seal it. This will remain on your altar or in a safe, sacred space “incubating” until the Full Moon. Thank the Goddess Ix Chel for her presence. As you blow out the candles, you are releasing energies that have been invited into your space. Sage again, this time begin in the North and go counterclockwise – from North to West to South to East to North again. The water can remain on your altar or, if you only have a temporary space, take it to the roots of a tree and pour it into the Earth.
Each day from the Dark Moon until the night of the Full Moon, sit with your envelope and think of your seed growing in your womb of creation. Breathe life into it through meditation each day.
Look at the list of items that you will need on the Full Moon and spend the next two weeks gathering them together.
Night of the Full Moon – Putting your Ix Chel Medicine Bag together with the Mother Aspect of Ix Chel – Lady of the Rainbow – Medicine Woman
Items Needed for your Seed of Creation Bag (make this as simple or complicated as you like):
- Small bag or pouch – can be made of leather, or woven, or cloth. Find one that resonates with you and can be tucked in your pocket or worn around your neck.
- Copal and/or Tobacco (If you cannot find these which are specific to Ix Chel, you could substitute white sage)
- An image of the Moon – this can be a crystal (moonstone or quartz), a white bead, or an actual image that you print (make sure it is a small image that can be folded into the bag)
- Reeds or Grass
- Other offerings to Ix Chel: cocoa beans, turquoise, jade, lilies, lotus, lotus pods, agate, brown jasper, carnelian, red coral, rainbow obsidian, sweetgrass, almond
- A bead, feather, or image that represents the animals of Ix Chel that resonate for you – Dragonflies, Eagle, Vulture, Jaguar, Snake, Spider, Rabbit
- A red crystal or red bead that symbolizes your seed of creation – your womb creation
- The envelope that you sealed at the Dark Moon
- In meditation leading up to the Full Moon, Ix Chel may request something not on this list for you to include, so follow your intuition since this is your personal bag for Ix Chel and your seed of creation
For the Altar:
- 3 candles (can be tealights and don’t forget a lighter!)
- Copal or Sage for smudging and clearing your space, and a vessel to burn it in, like a shell. Copal will require charcoal and something like a cauldron that can hold the hot charcoal.
- A bowl filled halfway with water (preferably a white bowl)
- Image of Ix Chel (printed or statue)
On the evening of the Full Moon, create sacred space somewhere that is quiet and where you will not be disturbed. You can play quiet meditation music in the background – something with flutes and drums would be lovely and appropriate for Ix Chel. On your altar (if you have one) or on a low table on the ground, place the three candles, your smudging supplies, the bowl that is half-filled with water, the image of Ix Chel in her Mother Form, and all of your items for your Seed of Creation bag.
Begin by smudging your space beginning in the South and moving clockwise with copal or sage. At each direction, pause for a moment and lift the smudging vessel, and breathe deeply. From South to West to North to East to South again. Place the smudging vessel back on the altar and sit down in front of the altar. Light the three candles, representing the three aspects of Ix Chel.
Breathing deeply, invite the presence of Ix Chel (this is my invocation or you may create your own):
Lady of the Rainbow, Weaver of the World, Goddess of Becoming, I placed my seed of creation into my womb, our womb. I breathed life into the seed in your name. Goddess Ix Chel, I ask for your presence now to make my seed of creation manifest in my life. Bring your Medicine, your Wisdom, your Fertile Waters and bless me with the inspiration of your energy and woman power. Thank you, Goddess of the Moon, She who walks the Night Skies, Protector of Women, Midwife of the Universe!
Make sure that your copal or sage is lit and stable in the vessel. Begin by smudging your bag in the smoke rising from the smudge vessel. Then, mindfully and with intent, smudge each item and place it in the bag. Save the envelope for last. If you would like to say what you are placing in the bag and why, you can. Speak about why each item is important in the energy of your Seed of Creation.
When all the items are in the bag, carefully open the envelope and read what you wrote. You can read it aloud. You can read the invocation of Ix Chel again as well. Go with your intuition. When you have read it, feel the energy of this seed that you have been nurturing since the Dark of the Moon. Feel it imbued with the Medicine of Ix Chel in all of her forms. Mindfully, fold the paper and put it into your bag. Tie the bag shut making three knots (if it has the strings) and with each knot, thinking of the power of Ix Chel and her medicine.
Give thanks to the Goddess again for her presence and assistance.
As you blow out the candles, you are releasing energies that have been invited into your space. Sage again, this time begin in the South and go counterclockwise – from South to East to North to West to South again. The water can remain on your altar or, if you only have a temporary space, take it to the roots of a tree and pour it into the Earth.
Keep your Seed of Creation bag close to you until the New Moon. The cycle is completing. You can sleep with it under your pillow, carry it in your pocket or purse with you. Each day until the New Moon, keep the bag with you as often as possible.
Near to New Moon/Crescent Moon – completing the cycle – Meditation with Ix Chel – The Maiden Goddess of the Moon
The New Moon is a time spent in meditation with your Seed of Creation bag under the crescent moon if possible. Connect with the young, Maiden aspect of Ix Chel. She who Walks in Beauty and sees life and potential everywhere. Bring your smudging vessel and copal/sage. Allow the scent of the sage fill you, surround you. Give yourself a good smudge from toes to head.
Bring your journal and contemplate your intention for your Seed of Creation.
How has it grown in the month since you started?
What actions have you taken to manifest your seed of creation in the world?
Do you need to re-affirm the seed, breathe more life into it?
Have you cared for your creation and creative powers as if it were your child?
Have you made use of meditation and connection with Ix Chel?
What are the steps that you need to take to make your seed manifest?
As you work to bring your creative powers or your seed to manifestation, keep your bag close. Draw upon the power that you have put into the bag. Revel in your creative powers.
The Goddess Ix Chel reminds us that in the end, we are the source for change in our own destinies.
