Max Dashu Suppressed Histories ArchivesMax Dashu uses images to teach women’s global history and heritages. Her legendary slideshows bring to light the countless women of power who have been hidden from view, from ancient icons to female leaders, culture-makers, rebels, and medicine women. In 1970 Dashu founded the Suppressed Histories Archives to research women in the global cultural record – not only individuals, but also female spheres of power and egalitarian mother-right cultures. From her collection of over 30,000 images, Dashu has created hundreds of slideshows, and presented them at universities, women’s centers, bookstores, conferences, festivals, libraries, prisons, museums, and schools. She also shares them via webcasts, online courses, and daily Suppressed Histories posts on Facebook, followed by an audience of over 130,000.

Dashu is known for her expertise on female iconography in world archaeology, Goddess traditions, priestesses, medicine women, witches, and the witch hunts. Her work bridges the gap between academia and grassroots education, uncovering unwritten and obscured aspects of the cultural record, and  foregrounding indigenous women passed over by standard histories. She has keynoted at numerous conferences and presented at international symposia in Germany (2010), Mexico (2006), Bulgaria (2004), Britain (2007), Australia (2013), and the US (2005). Her articles have been published in Goddesses in World Culture (Praeger, 2010), Feminist Theology, and other journals and anthologies. More articles and book excerpts appear at www.suppressedhistories.net . She has released two videos on dvd, Woman Shaman: the Ancients (2013) and Women’s Power in Global Perspective (2008), as well as a series of posters on female spiritual heritages.

The Suppressed Histories Archives LogoMax is one of the founders of the Goddess resurgence. Her spiritual art had an impact from the early 70s on, appearing in early publications such as Womanspirit magazine and her own Witch Dream comix. (See www.maxdashu.net.) She is a wilderness backpacker, a practitioner of Wild Goose qigong, and a veleda who teaches shamanic movement and incantation.
