Essential oils not only smell wonderful but they have positive benefits for your health and well-being too. Creation of essential oils occurs by the volatile, fragrant properties of plants and flowers being extracted with steam distillation, expression or extraction. Essential oils are very highly concentrated so a carrier oil is recommended before using them on the skin.
There are multiple ways to use essential oils:
- Add to a carrier oil like Grapeseed Oil or Almond Oil to create your own massage oils
- 5 drops of an essential oil plus 1 teaspoon of base oil makes for a lovely addition to a steaming bath
- Diffuse throughout the house using oil burners
- Sprinkle a few drops on sheets or pillowcases for night time relaxation
Benefits of aromatherapy can be everything from calming anxiety (lavender) to energizing your mood (grapefruit) to relieving headaches (more lavender) and lowering blood pressure (ylang-ylang and geranium).
I use aromatherapy every day for uplifting my mood or promoting my health and the health of those in the house (diffuse that oil!).
Here are a few of the benefits of some my favorite oils …
Relaxation -chamomile, lavender, lemon eucalyptus, lemon verbena
Promote Sleep – bergamot, chamomile, frankincense, geranium, lavender, melissa, mandarin, neroli (orange blossom), rose, sandalwood, and tangerine
Headache Relief – lavender, melissa, peppermint, basil, chamomile, lemongrass
Uplifting (helps depression) – bergamot, cardamom, chamomile, cinnamon, lavender, lemon verbena, lemon, melissa, orange, neroli, rose, and ylang-ylang
Lower Blood Pressure – neroli, orange, melissa, tangerine, rose, ylang ylang, geranium
Anti-Viral (use them for colds and flu!) – bay, bergamot, black pepper, cardamom, cinnamon bark, clove bud, eucalyptus, garlic, geranium, holy basil, juniper, lavender, melissa, lemongrass, lemon, peppermint, rosemary sage, tea tree, and thyme
Begin to incorporate essential oils and aromatherapy into your everyday life and reap the all natural benefits!
When purchasing essential oils, make sure they are “essential oils” and not “fragrance oils”. If you are looking locally, Whole Foods carries a wide array of Essential Oils but, of course, my favorite Essential Oils are from NYR Organic. I started using them several years ago when I lived in London and after returning to the USA, I was tickled to become an NYR Organic Rep. Check out all of the NYR Organic Essential Oils
