For all those who could not sign into Facebook this morning or access some of the Twitter searches, welcome to Day 1 of the October 2013 Mercury Retrograde! Our charming trickster is making his presence known in the final Mercury Retrograde of 2013 and it has started with a bang!
Even if you have never heard of Mercury Retrograde, you have experienced it.
Mercury is the planet that rules the mind, communications, technology, travel, appointments, and things that are mechanical (like cars). The internet and computers also fall under Mercury’s auspices. Three times a year (and sometimes four), the planet Mercury goes “retrograde” and appears to be moving backwards. All of the planets except the Sun and Moon exhibit retrograde motion. Mercury retrogrades the most often, Venus the least often, and Pluto for the longest period of time. Unfortunately, Mercury Retrogrades cause the most problems in the everyday world.
What does Mercury Retrograde mean?
Mercury Retrograde can be a period of communication upset, delays, mechanical breakdowns and computer issues. Travel is delayed, re-routed, and cancelled. Mercury is the planet of travel as well as communication. Appliances misbehave – computers just lose it – cars drop transmissions and frustration increases in direct proportion to dread with each passing day of the retrograde. Contracts signed during this period may not be honored or will have to be revised…Deadlines are the stuff of DREAMS. And good luck trying to hash it out by talking about it – communications are jumbled, lost in the aethers, misunderstood or at a standstill.
Mercury is a Trickster God and the Messenger – with a big grin, he shakes up Planet Earth at these times and reminds us to take things a bit more slowly and step back from what can be everyday chaos. Obviously, we cannot stop our lives three to four times a year, but we can arm ourselves with information and work with the energy of Mercury Retrograde.
Dark Astrology gives us some fabulous insight on how to survive this Mercury Retrograde and how long the effects are truly going to last:
Mercury trine Neptune on October 3 makes one receptive to undercurrents, the sublime and subliminal. This will happen again for an extended period as Mercury stations direct from November 5 and then all the way until November 17 as Neptune also turns direct. Mercury with Neptune also make a minor grand trine to the goddess of love peaking on November 8. So we have a great many opportunities for tantric sex then during this period. We can take the carnal to an other level entirely. You don’t have to be partnered up to do this either, it can be channeled into powerful art or magic too. October 10 Mercury on Alphecca in the crown gives opportunity for some saucy role-playing. But this is a fortunate, artistic and poetic star despite its debauched reputation. Enjoy bohemian indulgences again on October 30 and November 23.
The theme of balance couldn’t be more clear when Mercury scuttles over the two scales of Libra. Prime days for commerce are when stationing retrograde Mercury is on the lucky northern scale on October 20/24 and then later while leaving the shadow zone on November 27/28 . These are wobbly days though, so maybe stick to selling something where people will have to keep coming back for more. Things like haircuts, massages, etc. Leave huge, one-off sales or purchases for another time. Beware of days when Mercury is on the southern scale of loss on October 13/14 and November 25 unless you deliberately want to lose someone…
Ways to Survive Mercury Retrograde October 2013
Mercury Retrograde is not all chaos. With Mercury going retrograde in Scorpio, this is a great time to focus inwardly. Meditation, organizing, making plans, writing, soul searching are all fantastic ways to take advantage of Mercury right now.
From the amazing Dipali Desai – Celestial Space Astrology Blog (read the whole article!)
Like a snake shedding its skin, this Mercury Retrograde in Scorpio provides us the prime opportunity to shed our perceptions, thinking and limitations within the mind. During the Mercury retrograde phase of about 3 weeks, it is a time to empty out the excess, extremes and floating debris within the mental energy body, mind and thought process. Reading so much information, half of it or more people never use! Can you imagine what you are storing and how that slows down your processing and having clarity of thought? This is a time where we can examine which perception, thought, idea, concept and information is empowering and helpful and which one will take us into the depths of fear and even terror. So consider this precious phase where we will shed outworn thoughts, stuck thinking and fixations within the mind.
Organizing and planning are two of my favorite Mercury Retrograde activities. Navel gazing ranks up there too – remember to go with the flow!
