As I referenced in the Meditation in the Secret Garden – Links to Love post for the week, my brain is a busy brain and many years ago, I realized that for my meditation time to be successful, I had to distract my busy brain. One of my favorite ways to distract the brain is Mantras!
After incorporating mantras into my meditative practices (and eventually daily activities) I found that my busy brain was enchanted with repeating the beautiful and sometimes intricate chants, enabling the rest of me to … breathe … relax … do my meditative business and spiritual journeywork. The bonus is always the benefit of the mantra itself.
Deva Premal is an incredible musician and singer of mantras. I began with some of her early albums like The Essence and Embrace and I fell in love with her haunting voice and the ancient sanskrit as she sang and chanted. Her father chanted the Gayatri Mantra to her when she was in her mother’s womb and then continued to use it as a lullaby. Many years later, as he was dying, Deva Premal and her partner, Miten, chanted the Gayatri to her father. Miten became her life partner and musical partner in 1990 and they have been traveling together since throughout the world.
Her deep connection to the Gayatri Mantra and other mantras is evident and pulls the listener into her breathtaking and powerful reality as she chants. Their connect to each other and the mantras sustains the music throughout … what Deva Premal and Miten have created together transforms the world.
Sometimes, I listen as I work and sometimes, I chant along; however you choose to experience Deva Premal and the mantras, I simply encourage you to begin!
In light of world events, I thought that sharing the amazing album from Deva Premal called Mantras for Precarious Times was completely necessary. As the Middle East seems to be caught in unending spirals of chaos and our own country is sitting on the brink of military actions, I have found myself fiercely repeating the Om Shanti Om mantra. Peace. Peace for myself, for you, for US, for the world. Mantras are a combination of prayer, music, chant and sacred seeds sounds of the universe. Even just listening to them lifts vibrations.
Mantras for Precarious Times by Deva Premal was released in 2009:
Deva chants each mantra 108 times, according to classic Vedic tradition for a mantra meditation practice, and each mantra has a special focus:
Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha (Removing of Obstacles); Om Shanti Om (Peace); Om Shree Dhanvantre Namaha (Healing); Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya (Liberation); Om Radha Krishnaya Namaha (Joy & Bliss); Om Shreem Mahalakshmiyei Namaha (Abundance); and Om Kama Pujitayei Namaha (Sacred Love Making).
Even if you have never chanted a mantra, just listening will invite that energy and focus into your body and mind and reverberate into the world.
The mantra of Om Gum Ganapatayei Namaha (Removing of Obstacles), also a mantra for Ganesh, has been one that I have worked with for over eight years. When I was going through challenging times as my marriage was ending, I began to chant the mantra daily at first. It made me feel more in control and soothed and then … amazingly … I began to see the situation moving and obstacles moving out of my way. This mantra is one that I unconsciously chant or begin muttering (I try not to do it in public) when I feel bogged down or need to get the energy moving in my life.
In an interview with LA Yoga Magazine, Deva discussed the potent effect many notice when chanting Sanskrit mantras:
“The meaning is secondary. The word table is not the table…With Sanskrit, the word ananda is the sound vibration of bliss. In sound the energy of bliss. We have to say bliss; we have to make it smaller by putting it into an English word. Just the sound; ananda, If we were sensitive enough we’d just feel the entire scope of that energy that’s contained in this sound… It’s working on a cellular level. It’s much deeper than the mind. It’s not a language that you need to understand the meaning of before you use it. It’s a deep universal sound code that connects us all.”
We are in Precarious Times and mantras can benefit all of us, individually and as a joined conscious universal network.
