In the founding and creating of The MotherHouse of the Goddess, the Goddess Aletheia has made Her presence known and presents us with the Her very unique gifts: the opportunity to live “unhidden” lives full of Truth, Re-memberance of our WomanRoots, and Empowerment.
Greek Goddess, Aletheia in mythology was a daughter of Zeus who personified the ideals of Truth and Sincerity. Her Roman counterpart is Veritas.
Aletheia (ἀλήθεια) is a Greek word variously translated as “unclosedness”, “unconcealedness”, “disclosure” or “truth”. The literal meaning of the word ἀ–λήθεια is “the state of not being hidden; the state of being evident” and it also implies sincerity, as well as factuality or reality. (wiki)
A combination of chatter, consultations of numerology and an openness to see which Goddess would show up brought us (myself and Tracey – Co-Founder of the MotherHouse of the Goddess) to Aletheia and upon further exploration, the deft hand of the Goddess was revealed. Truth is Aletheia, but also wound into the meaning and etymology of the word Aletheia are the concepts of remembering and the state of being unhidden. Implication is that the journey, that which we are seeking, needs to be “remembered” and “unhidden” to connect fully with the Goddess Aletheia.
Truth, the Goddess Aletheia, simply is. The laws of the Gods, universal laws, the rhythms of nature simply are. Perception filters, the laws of man, life experiences, interpretation of information are where the experience of Truth become human. Each human may see Truth differently (really interpret the Truth differently) but it doesn’t change Truth itself. Rather, it reflects who we are and all of the attendant baggage that we carry.
Women are a perfect example of the application of the perception filters of Truth. Labels have been applied to the nature of Woman for thousands of years, beginning with sacred and divine, at times unclean and shunned, and accusations of wanton and tempting. These were the Truths that others applied to women and we accepted them and even lived entire lives under those labels: the Mother, the Career Woman, the Good Daughter, the Attendant Wife, the Whore, the Bitch, too many to name. Under those labels and the acceptance by women of those labels, there was always Aletheia – She burns brightly in our WomanRoots, our Women’s Blood and within our Women’s Mysteries. She held the Truth until we were ready to Remember and Become Unhidden. For some, the journey to their True Selves is too frightening or perceived to be too difficult and Aletheia is relegated to the obscured and forgotten.
Contained within the etymology of the word Aletheia is “lethe” meaning “forgetfulness”, “oblivion”. Lethe is also one of the five rivers of the Underworld in Hades.
According to Statius, it bordered Elysium, the final resting place of the virtuous. Ovid wrote that the river flowed through the cave of Hypnos, god of sleep, where its murmuring would induce drowsiness.
The shades of the dead were required to drink the waters of the Lethe in order to forget their earthly life. In the Aeneid, Virgil writes that it is only when the dead have had their memories erased by the Lethe that they may be reincarnated. (wiki)
Rigid upbringings, cultural mores and repeat patterning all contribute to the concealing of Self and a trip down the River Lethe. Aletheia speaks to us every single day. Each moment holds the promise of remembrance. Moments of the undefinable niggling at us are swept away in mundane pitches of life and frantic activity, the modern day River Lethe.
Remembrance of our WomanRoots – our True Selves, Actualizing Authenticity and Cultivating the State of Unhidden could be called The Great Work. The impetus of Aletheia is to take on the mantle of The Great Work – Personal Transformation in accordance with our Truth of Self. Actualization and emergence of our True Self occurs as we allow the soul to burgeon and unfold itself – the action of revealing. Revealing leads the Self to connect and tune to its proper place in the Universe. Attainment occurs when our True Self releases its Will into the Universe and takes action. Aletheia has started a chain reaction of potentiality for lives full of Bliss and Self Love and Authenticity. Our WomanRoots are planted deeply and firmly, infusing us with the Sacred everyday.
These principles sound marvelous and sparkling – kind of like a unicorn. But, do unicorns really exist and can they co-exist in our lives with screaming children, crazy schedules, exhaustion and all the other bits of not-so-sparkly? YES. Fear, the lies we tell ourselves (or allow others to tell us) and feelings of aloneness and being stuck are the barriers to Aletheia.
“Your problem is how you are going to spend this one and precious life you have been issued. Whether you’re going to spend it trying to look good and creating the illusion that you have power over circumstances, or whether you are going to taste it, enjoy it and find out the truth about who you are.” ― Anne Lamott
How can we invite Aletheia and her gorgeous unicorn into our lives? By taking one action on one day and then repeating. Read a book that fills your soul with joy. Spend the day with friends that see you, hear you and acknowledge you. Make joy a choice every single day and stop running to the dark places in your head. Connect with the Goddess Aletheia and begin a wondrous journey to your True Self.
Aletheia is a huge aspiration and inspiration for the Journal of the MotherHouse of the Goddess and one that excites me to the tips of my toes. I even rode my unicorn around the living room!
The answers have always been within us. The Seed of the Goddess is the Aletheia of Your Soul.
Together, we can discover and stand in our Truths, Remember our WomanRoots, and Live Unhidden.
Will you join us here at The MotherHouse of the Goddess? I can’t wait to SEE you!
